Major Learning Outcome 1
MLO 5: CULTURAL INTERNALIZATION & LANGUAGE IMMERSION
Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experiences, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities.
Students develop intercultural communication skills and strategies, and learn to adapt and respond in effective ways.
Pathway 1: Study Abroad: By participating in a study-abroad program in a Spanish-speaking country for one at least summer or one semester. Classes completed in the study-abroad experience may also be counted towards another MLO.
Pathway 2: Latino Heritage Community Project: By participating in and completing a community project in a local Latino community, in the target language.

Prompt: Write a reflective statement for each of the following Major Learning Outcomes (MLO) supported by samples of your best work related to this MLO. Do not just list courses and what you learned from each course, but rather provide reflective narrative by describing connections to your learning related to the outcomes for each MLO. Note that each MLO has several outcomes.
Samples: Provide samples of your work that meet each MLO’s outcomes (explain why you have chosen them as evidence that you met the outcomes you are referring to). By keeping your best samples from the beginning, you will be able to see your growth so you can write a reflective analysis of your achievement.
Step 1: List the MLO and its outcomes (for each MLO). Step 2: List the courses you completed toward this MLO.
Step 3: Addressing each outcome of the MLO separately, incorporate all courses you completed/will complete toward this MLO, and reflect how your thinking and understanding of this MLO’s outcome has developed and refer to samples you link. Samples can be papers (PDF), or multimedia products. Length: Each statement should be approximately 400-600 words.
Some topics for reflection include:
How was meeting the outcomes of this MLO supported by the courses you completed?
What areas within the MLO have you developed and what areas you wish to continue to develop?
What areas of the MLO did you find challenging and how did you overcome or deal with
the challenges?
How did this MLO contribute to your personal intellectual growth? Notes:
If you participated in Study Abroad, how did that experience affect your understanding of the MLO?
Be very selective: quality of representative work is more valuable than quantity of work
Step 4: List each sample and explain why you are using it as evidence. e.g.
Sample 1: Composition, SPAN 301
Sample 2: Term Paper, SPAN 304
Sample 3: Presentation, SPAN 302 Link to MLOs (at bottom of this document)
Note, MLO 5 has specific details for the narrative (see above)
