MLO Reflective Narrative
To fulfill this MLO, I have completed the course SPAN 304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature (Fall 2021) and SPAN 321:Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature (Spring 2022)
According to this MLO, students will develop comprehension skills through literature, as they learn about the history, beliefs, and values of Latin American and Hispanic cultures. During SPAN 304 class, I learned about the general concept of literature and the different elements that compose it. I also enjoyed learning about renowned Hispanic authors, such as Amado Nervo, Federico Garcia Lorca, Ruben Dario, and others, who have contributed to Latin American and Spanish literature. For this class, I chose to do an essay on the work La Casa de Bernarda de Alba by Federico Garcia Lorca whereI analyzed how women are marginalized by Spanish society in the play. La desigualdad de gene. I chose this work because I learned about the role played by women in Spain during the Franco dictatorship. . There were also other relevant issues presented in the play such as poverty, sexuality, family traditions and values, authoritarianism, etc. All the works we studied in the class contributed to my cultural, social, and political knowledge. On the other hand, in my SPAN321 class, my literary knowledge expanded exceptionally as I was able to closely analyze some works I had previously read about. Enjoy reading works like Fuente Ovejuna, Don Quixote de la Mancha, La Celestina, etc. What I liked the most is that during the classes we discussed the works and we all had different perspectives. Likewise, these discussions helped me to dialogue critically and write academic essays. In my classes, I practiced my Spanish both in writing and reading, every week we delivered an analysis of a literary work, and that helped to improve my writing skills. At the end of class, we wrote an essay in which I focused on the work La Casa de Bernarda Alba "La opresion y la busqueda de la libertad". This essay was very significant since I was able to learn to critically analyze this work. My goal was to be able to show how women were oppressed by society and did not have the same opportunities as men, which is a problem that is still present in our society to this day. Likewise, through this essay I learned about the history and culture of Spain which was something new for me. Some of the challenges that I had to work through as I worked to complete this MLO were working hard to analyze the literary works we covered in class in more details; since many times in these include social criticism and it is important to understand and analyze these critiques. On the other hand, my writing improved as I learned grammar and new words. Without a doubt, these classes were very productive.
